Miami Dade County public schools selects UNICCO for FM services

April 16, 2003—Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) has selected a group led by UNICCO Service Company to provide maintenance management services for the county’s 338 school department buildings. Miami Dade County Public Schools is the fourth largest K-12 district in America with over 366,000 students.

The contract is unique in that current employees will continue to work for the District while UNICCO provides overall management and, with its partners, re-engineering services. Through this arrangement, MDCPS benefits from UNICCO’s management, and technical and training expertise. It is projected that the contract will result in productivity gains of five-percent or greater per year over the next five years.

UNICCO has responsibility for overall maintenance operations. UNICCO’s lead partner is Management Results Inc. (MRI). Other partner companies include VKG Inc., Performance Consulting Associates, VFA Inc. and WhyDataWorks.

UNICCO and its partners are responsible for managing the maintenance department’s human resources, as well as finance, accounting, budgeting, measurement and quality. UNICCO has already begun to provide leadership for the District in two vital areas. The District is plagued with a very high incidence of Fire and Life Safety violations. UNICCO will introduce its facilities management techniques to MDCPS properties through a three phased approach—survey, assessment/development and implementation.

UNICCO uses facilities services quality measures, such as Balanced Scorecard, to ensure continuous improvement in service quality. The company will also benchmark against recognized public quality measures using criteria from the Florida Sterling Council Improvement Model and the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government (OPPAGA).
