January 21, 2002—Milliken Carpet and Reuse Development Organization, Inc. (ReDO) have formed a coalition to support the resuse, rather the recycling, of used carpets.
“While much attention focuses on recycling carpet, commercial carpet tiles are frequently changed for style and preference reasons, rather than wear or damage. Reuse brings the benefits of extending product life cycles,” said ReDos Executive Director Julie Rhodes.
The ReDO Donations Program formally began accepting used carpet tiles from Milliken customers in November 2000. During the first 90 days of this pilot program, Milliken & Company associates in the commercial carpet sales organization processed donations representing tens of thousands of yards of carpet. The collaboration continues to grow and divert carpet tiles from landfills for reuse.
Through initial exposure the Milliken sales network is utilizing the reuse network on a regular basis. The non-profit reuse centers receiving the are placing the material with appropriate end-users. In most cases, the carpet tiles are being re-used in residential, low-income housing to improve the quality of life by providing a functional, aesthetically pleasing and safe floor covering.
