The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Recycling Division has honored Milliken & Company with a Recognition Award for its overall environmental achievements, including development of the Earth Square carpet renewal process. Besides Earth Square, the SPE found Milliken’s overall environmental achievements, such as 98 percent reduction in solid waste and 88 percent reduction in SARA chemicals over 10 years, to be “extremely impressive.”
The Earth Square carpet renewal program, which has received numerous awards, differs from traditional recycling efforts that shred carpet for secondary markets, because the old carpet is actually renewed and reused. The used carpet tiles are sent to Milliken, where they are super-cleaned, re-textured, and restyled using updated carpet designs. The tiles are then installed for another life cycle, providing a 100% post-consumer waste product. The Connecticut-based SPE presents the Recognition Award periodically to individual companies that have demonstrated environmental leadership in the plastics industry.
