April 24, 2026 — Multi-site facility managers (MSFMs) watch the monthly jobs report for their sector to anticipate if there may be additions to the number of stores or sites they manage or if there is a consecutive-months decline in retail sales and employment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report for March 2026 indicated the retail trade sector showed little net change, with specific reports indicating a modest gain of 9,700 jobs for the month.
Three indicators that contribute to these figures:
-
Sector performance: While the overall U.S. economy added 178,000 non-farm payroll jobs in March — a rebound from a decline in February — retail trade remained relatively stable.
-
Broader labor trends: The modest growth in retail contrasts with more significant gains in other sectors such as health care (+76,000) and construction (+26,000).
-
Seasonal context: This performance aligns with broader trends where the sector has experienced varying levels of stability throughout early 2026, following fluctuations in hiring and separations reported in the Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) data for the prior month.
