Nearly 80% of major US companies monitor their employees by checking their e-mail, Internet, or telephone connections or by videotaping them at work, according to a recent survey by the American Management Association of 1,627 large and mid-sized US firms. 27% of surveyed companies say that they have fired employees for misuse of office e-mail or Internet connections; the misuse was most often related to downloading pornography. The survey revealed that companies in the US monitor employees much more frequently than those in the UK.
