MX Logic reports 13 percent of spam messages use email authentication schemes

February 23, 2005—MX Logic, Inc., a leading provider of email defense solutions that ensure email protection and security, reports that spammers continue to leverage email authentication schemes, Sender ID and Sender Policy Framework (SPF), intended to help stop fraudulent email.

In a sample of more than 1.2 million unique spam email messages that passed through the MX Logic Threat Center from January 24 through January 31, 2005, 13 percent had published Sender ID or SPF records. This compares with a 16 percent adoption rate reported by MX Logic in September 2004.

The latest corporate email security statistics from the MX Logic Threat Center also show that, on average, five percent of all unsolicited commercial email through the MX Logic Threat Center in January complied with the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act, down from an all-time high of 7 percent compliance in December 2004.

MX Logic has measured CAN-SPAM compliance each month since the law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2004. Monthly compliance has ranged from a low of 0.54 percent in July 2004 to a high of 7 percent in December 2004. MX Logic tracks compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act by examining a random sample of 10,000 unsolicited commercial emails each week.
