January 28, 2002—The National Association of Manufacturers is leading the Asbestos Alliance, a coalition advocating legislation to place reasonable limits on asbestos claims. “The open-ended liability of asbestos litigation is imperiling economic recovery and diverting funds away from people who are ill to people who are not,” said Michael Baroody, NAM Executive Vice President. “We are working for reasonable limits that preserve the rights of people who have actually suffered harm from exposure to asbestos.”
NAM will also focus its legislative and policy efforts on taxes, trade and energy, said Baroody. “We are beginning to see some signs of an economic rebound, but were a long way from where we should be,” Baroody said. “Manufacturing was in recession a full six months before the rest of the economy followed suit.”
