August 20, 2001—The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released the second draft of NFPA 5000, Building Code, the first building code to be developed using an open consensus process, accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). When finalized, the NFPA Building Code will round out the only full set of integrated codes for the built environment.
Groups like the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) are partnering with NFPA to develop the code.
The preliminary draft of NFPA’s building code prompted 1,400 proposals from interested groups and individuals. The current (August 7) release of the Report on Proposals (ROP) gives all interested parties another opportunity to provide input on the building code (deadline October 5, 2001). A copy of the Building Code Committee ROP on NFPA 5000 may be reviewed online, or by calling 800/344-3555. A Report on Comments will be published in April of 2002, and the document will be up for vote by the NFPA membership in May of 2002.
