September 15, 2004—During National Preparedness Month, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will launch a series of workshops on private sector preparedness, based on NFPA 1600, Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs.
The standard’s adoption, one of the recommendations issued by the 9/11 Commission in July, has been supported by Department of Homeland Security’s Secretary Tom Ridge.
Since April, NFPA 1600 has been available free online in PDF format. The standard establishes a common set of criteria for disaster management, emergency management and business continuity programs. In addition, it provides a list of resource organizations within the fields of disaster recovery, emergency management and business continuity planning.
To date, the document has been downloaded 20,000 times.
The scheduled workshops, tailored to facility emergency managers, will kick off in New York City. Over the next months, the sessions will be held in 11 other major-city locations throughout the United States.
