January 25, 2002—The National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Campus Ecology program has launched a new campaign, Driving Sustainable Markets, to encourage campuses to purchase environmentally preferable products. The NWF will partner with the National Association of Educational Buyers to educate administrators, faculty, and students at the nation’s college and universities. These campuses, with buildings, fleets of vehicles, offices, residences, stadiums, and hospitals, spend an estimated $257 billion, or 2.8 percent of the gross domestic product each year (1999 figures from 2000 Digest of Education Statistics). Available beginning April 2002, a one-hour “Teach-In,” or on-demand Web-based course, will focus on products such as energy, SmartWood, paper, and computers.
