Nation’s Largest Dredging and Landfill Project

The Port of Los Angeles and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers celebrated the official completion of the largest dredging and landfill project in America — the Pier 400 Dredging and Landfill Program — a significant milestone in positioning one of the nation’s busiest ports to accommodate the tremendous growth in international trade well into the 21st century.

“Pier 400 is a monumental engineering feat,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Larry A. Keller about the dredging and landfill project that has created an island made from material dredged from the ocean bottom. “We’ve virtually raised the ocean floor to create this 590-acre site — part of which will be the future home of the world’s largest proprietary container facility to be operated by Maersk Sealand. And it couldn’t have been done without the excellent partnership established with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Los Angeles City Councilman Rudy Svorinich, Jr. (15th District) applauded the Port and Corps for the completion of Pier 400. “This project is an excellent example of local-federal partnership in action. It creates needed facilities to accommodate the increased movement of goods, while stimulating the economy in our region and remaining sensitive to our environment.” Svorinich declared that the completion of the dredging and landfill program clears the way for the development of a 484-acre container terminal for Maersk Sealand, which will bring in some $2 billion to the City over a 25-year agreement.
