NeoCon ’04: HON’s Alaris Work Chair made with Lycra fabric for body-forming back support

June 23, 2004—Alaris Work Chair by The HON Company was among several major products introduced during NeoCon at its Merchandise Mart showroom. Alaris uses a patented control that requires no adjustment, simply a proprietary new Lycra fabric called Resilience, a combination of standard polyester and a unique polyester stretch and recovery yarn developed into a proprietary fabric by HON.

Resilience can virtually stand on its own as back support, since it requires no inner shell of support. HON pioneered the yarn prototype and directed Interface Fabrics to develop a proprietary seating fabric for HON, then HON created the seating design of the Alaris Work Chair around it.

Alaris’s patented control requires no adjustment and offers a passive hip-pivot motion. The Chair’s control allows people to lock the back in an upright position for working, or unlock to recline. When in the recline position, the back is in line with the hip joint and the front of the seat doesn’t rise or cut lower leg circulation. Alaris models include a fixed-arm swivel, armless swivel, adjustable-arm swivel, and armless side chair with arm-pack option. The chair’s frame and Resilience fabric back are offered in black and titanium, and the seat fabric is available in all HON fabric selections.

Alaris follows the principles of sustainable design. The steel in the chair and its packaging are 30% post-consumer recycled material, and the seat board is made of 100% recycled wood. The aluminum base and polypropylene back crossbar are made from 100% post-consumer recycled material.
