June 23, 2004—The Haworth showroom in The Merchandise Mart received top honors at this year’s NeoCon, the World Trade Fair for Office Furnishings. The space was recognized by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Contract magazine as The Best Large Showroom and The Best of Show showroom. The 23,000 sq.ft. showroom, designed by architecture and design firm, Perkins & Will/Eva Maddox Branded Interiors.
The showroom features workspace vignettes that address the ways people work today with Haworth’s furniture systems. The showroom also demonstrates that sustainable design is good design. Haworth and Perkins & Will teams worked together to create a space that “uplifts the human spirit.” One such feature is a large pool of water built into the raised floorlined with iridescent glass tiles and murmuring with flowing water that offers occupants a place to restore and refresh themselves.
Haworth’s Chicago showroom is a pilot project in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED-CI (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design—Commercial Interiors program. Natural light from south-racing windows illuminates the space; glass and floor components were re-used in construction; products were made with rapidly renewable resources; and HVAC systems routed through raised floors cut energy consumption and improve indoor air quality.
