NeoCon’05: Metro’s Poly seating family combines style with environmental sustainability

June 6, 2005—Metro, a Steelcase company that creates furniture designed to improve the experience of life at work, is previewing Poly, a family of modern seating products formed around a material process that promotes environmental sustainability, according to Metro. Metro refers to Poly as inviting and comfortable, noting that the furniture blurs the line between commercial and residential seating applications.

Poly consists of side, swivel, and lounge chairs suitable for a range of applications, including meeting spaces, guest seating, and lounge areas. Side chairs can be ordered with two base options: four-leg and sled. Swivel chairs come with a star base, with and without casters. A lounge chair has a swivel star base.

Poly, says Metro, is designed for sustainability. Unconsolidated non-woven PET fiber (PolyEthylene Terephthalate, the material commonly found in soda bottles) and a 100% recycled polyester fabric (woven from PET fibers) are bonded together to create a completely recyclable shell. Metal components are finished with a VOC-free abrasion-resistant powder coating. Assembled together, the seating components are composed of more than 25% recycled content by weight.

Designed for disassembly using common hand tools, each component may be completely recycled at its end-of-use through the Steelcase Environmental Partnership Program.
