NeoCon’07: Davis Body chair is a minimalist design that forms a flowing sculpture

June 20, 2007—World renowned furniture designer Burkhard Vogtherr, who has designed executive seating for Davis Furniture Industries for 20 years, has brought a new concept to his Body Chair series, says the company.

He started with the mechanism he designed for the Lucid Chair, which offers seat length adjustment, tension control, synchro-tilt, height adjustment, and a lever to lock the back in place. Vogtherr then sculptured a new frame that opened many possibilities for back and arm applications.

The frame evolved into an engineering marvel that pushed the limits of cast aluminum, according to Davis. Vogtherr kept the strength of the frame where necessary, but carved away areas to create a flowing sculpture with thick and thin profiles. This frame is attached to the rail on the seat mechanism, to create a rocking motion. The frame is offered in polished aluminum and powdercoat finishes black, silver, matte black and matte silver.

To the completed basic frame, the designer added a black knitted back with two heights. This knitted back allows the user to sit back into the chair and supports any size person, creating an extremely comfortable chair with a super thin profile.

The Headrest Chair offers a pivoting pillow headrest that can be adjusted to the user’s preference. The High Back version has a curved back rail that adds a shapely detail from the back and doubles as a handle to pull the chair out. The Low Back Chair offers a shorter version of the High Back.

The Body Chair series was unveiled during NeoCon The World’s Trade Fair in June, at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago.
