NeoCon’08: Acuity seating from Allsteel has a weight-activated back support

June 16, 2008—Allsteel says it has achieved a comfort coup in office seating with Acuity, a chair that delivers on all measures of performance and comfort, according to the company. It is an adaptive chair that yields a healthy seating experience, with easy to adjust controls that are highly ergonomic and within easy reach when seated.

ACUITY, a Best of NeoCon Silver award winner for Ergonomic Seating, is a fully-featured task seat with a very high-design look. It has weight-activated controls, allowing it to conform to all users, large-to-small.

The weight-activated back support mechanism adapts to the individual, notes the company. The chair, which was shown during NeoCon World’s Fair held in June at the Merchandise Mart, Chicago, also features a conforming mesh back and carrier combination that adapts by flexing to the user’s shape, so the user stays in contact with the chair through a range of motion.

The contoured seat provides improved support and reduces stress on pressure points, which contributes to long-term comfort. The seat is a molded foam base with memory foam on top that provides a soft, cushioned feel throughout the day.

Acuity was developed in a first-time collaboration with Design Continuum Italia, the Milan-based product innovator. The Allsteel assignment was Continuum’s first chair design. The collaboration began with research among consumers across the US, and the user perspective was critical to the design.
