NeoCon’08: East meets West in Marco Polo modular carpet collection from Milliken

June 18, 2008—Inspired by the travels of the 13th century explorer, Milliken’s Marco Polo Collection traces the fascinating worldwide journey of the renowned Venetian trader. The collection is a celebration of different ideas and cultures as well as diverse traditions and technologies. East meets West and Old World and Modern Day converge.

The collection offers a coordinated package of designs that can be combined to create intriguing transitions across the floor plane. A visual transformation occurs as opposites converge and one pattern morphs into the next. Colors blend from dark to light, designs switch from large to small and patterns combine and layer across the carpet. Intriguing textures and unexpected dimension occurs as Millikens Convergence technology integrates texture with pattern and color to create a carpet with a new type of structure, dimensionality and depth.

Each of the collection’s eight patterns (Genoa, Venezia, Constantinople, Sumatra, Ceylon, Kasgar, Lhasa and Lotus Flower) draws inspiration from a stop on Marco Polo’s epic adventure. Genoa, for example, is a multi colored hounds tooth that celebrates the vibrancy of the Italian port city, bringing an unexpected injection of color and newness to a classic design. Kasgar, on the other hand, honors the traditional rug designs of Central Asia and offers a striking counterpoint to the collection’s more geometric designs. Lotus Flower draws its inspiration from centuries of Buddhist art to create an exotic and beautiful centerpiece to the collection.
