NeoCon’09: Vitra’s Playns furniture system helps define time for privacy

June 26, 2009—The new furniture system Playns by Vitra incorporates a spatial solution that allows for phases of concentrated work and privacy in the same location. Vitra created the system with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, and it debuted at the NeoCon World’s Trade Fair, at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

Playns visually aids in defining the occupant at work whether that person is Nesting or Netting. A meeting place for teamwork is called Netting. A place where employees can retreat to for concentrated working is called Nesting. A person seated at the desk sends out different signals than someone who is standing. Shielded by the protective screens, a person sitting down in the Playns system lets others know he or she is concentrating on a task and does not want to be disturbed.

Playns makes Nesting possible without the worker having to leave the workstation. The height of the desk clearly indicates who wishes to communicate and who does not want to be disturbed, says the company.

The Playns workstations can be grouped in islands of different sizes. Equipped with a central power supply channel that feeds each workstation, the construction is so stable that two desks placed opposite to one another are supported by a total of four inwardly angled legs.

Playns also provides space for storing work document and personal effects. Clearly articulating privacy and protection, the rounded screens in two sizes define an individual work environment for each workstation and allow both Netting and Nesting with the interplay of the different desk height.
