September 30, 2009—The Construction Safety Council has developed a training kit on the four major construction hazards (fall, electrical, health, and struck-by and caught-in-between) and methods to avoid those hazards. Funding for the training was provided through a Susan Harwood Training Grant from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA).
Focus 4: A Grassroots Approach 2007-2009 is available in English, Spanish and Polish, and presents the information in an easy-to-understand pictoral format for non-English-speaking workers and others.
The learning modules are designed for facilitation by faith-based groups and community organizations that have already gained the trust and respect of at-risk workers, as well as contractors who employ these workers.
The modules come in the form of a large, durable flip chart, with one side of the book showing an illustration of hazards and control measures, and the reverse side containing instructor notes. The training is geared to be used by instructors with some construction background, but who are not health and safety professionals.
Training topics include: Employee General Safety, Housekeeping, Material Handling Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, Health Hazards, Ladder Safety, Fall Protection, Scaffolds, Aerial Lifts, Overhead Power Lines, Electrical Safety, Power Tool Hazards, Machine Guarding, Trench and Excavation Safety, Cranes and Rigging, and Work Zone Traffic Safety.
