July 10, 2006—Making Better Concrete: Guidelines to Using Fly Ash for Higher Quality, Eco-Friendly Structures by Bruce King, PE, is a guide for architects, engineers, builders, and others that explains the use of high-flyash concrete.
According to the book, using coal flyash to replace 50% or more of the Portland cement in concrete mixes is a “huge opportunity for designers and builders to get better concrete with a significantly smaller ecological footprint.” The author advocates this increased use in flyash, but warns that even greater care must be taken to properly design and pour the concrete.
Making Better Concrete covers the history of flyash and pozzolans, describes materials with pozzolanic properties, and explains how they work, how to specify them, and how to work with the resulting mix on the jobsite. It summarizes the performance and environmental benefits of using flyash and includes appendices with sample mixes and listings of useful resources.
