New budgeting guide offers FMs financial know-how

October 8, 2003—The Facility Manager’s Guide to Finance & Budgeting is designed to give FMs in all organizations the financial and budget know-how to turn their initiatives into fiscally powerful business strategies integrated into their organization’s objectives.

The book explains how to:

  • Manage facilities work programs and programmatic planning and budgeting
  • Develop and manage an annual expense budget, then evaluate the results
  • Make financially sound “go/no go” decisions on projects requiring capital funding
  • Pinpoint significant cost-savings and cost-containment areas
  • Benchmark facilities management initiatives using unit-cost indicators
  • Create an information system and database that tie directly into the budget.

The book is organized by functional areas, but it shows FMs how to integrate financial and business practices across disciplines, thus increasing productivity, maximizing staff resources, and saving money. Each chapter begins with several “pulse points” or practices that will improve FMs’ fiscal management skills and put them on equal footing with their counterparts in other business units.

Valuable tools include sample strategic facilities plans, annual work plans, annual reports to management, capital budget formats, project management reports, and other helpful documents, along with practical information and illuminating examples.

The Facility Manager’s Guide to Finance & Budgeting by David Cotts & Edmond P. Rondeau, published in September 2003, is available now from the publisher, AMACOM Books.
