The EU’s Employment and Social Policy Council has released a directive setting a deadline for introducing anti-age discrimination legislation in the UK. In addition to measures already in place against race and sex discrimination, the directive sets the deadlines for implementation of the new rules at 2003 for sexual orientation and religion, and 2006 for age and disability. According to workplacelaw.net, policies against age discrimination are likely to cause the most problems, requiring a major change in mindset in many companies. In spite of this, anti-discriminatory policies and procedures must be drafted, and staff and management must be trained to follow them carefully, as the penalties are likely to be severe if recent sex and race discrimination cases set the pace.
