New IREM guidebook helps property managers prepare for terrorism

October 16, 2002—The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) has published a book to help prepare real estate professionals in the event of an attack.

The guide, “Preparing for Terrorism: A Property Managers Guide,” is a 189-page book that walks real estate professionals through the realities of terrorism and teaches them how best to protect a building and its tenants.

“The shock of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks and the recent warnings by the FBI that terrorists will likely strike again, have awoken the world to the dangers of terrorism, and has shown people that, unfortunately, the improbable and catastrophic are suddenly quite possible,” says the books editor Richard F. Muhlebach, Certified Property Manager (CPM).

The guide covers such topics as:

  • Identifying Potential Terrorist Targets
  • Handling Threats and Bombings
  • Conducting a Bomb Search
  • Biological and Chemical Attacks
  • Cyber-terrorism
  • What to do in Hostage Crisis
  • Protecting Tenants
  • Elevator Emergencies
  • Evacuation Procedures
  • Training the Buildings Staff

The book offers tips on how to develop an emergency response for fires, power outages, evacuations and attending to injured people. “Whether you operate a high-rise or residential complex, whether you own, rent or lease your property, whether you are a large or small company—the concepts of this book will apply,” says Muhlebach. “Preparing for Terrorism: A Property Managers Guide” is priced at $40.
