January 16, 2009—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released four of its safety and health publications in Spanish:
- Hoja informativa: Lesiones mortales en trabajadores de servicios de jardinera (Fact Sheet: Fatal Injuries among Landscape Services Workers) (Pub. No. 2008-144, October 2008) Although landscape services workers make up 0.8% of the US workforce, they experienced 3.5% of the total occupational fatalities between 2003 and 2006, with 197 deaths—a fatality rate similar to that of more recognized high-risk industries. Landscape services workers complete such jobs as landscape and irrigation installation, lawn care, tree removal, general landscape maintenance, and snow removal.
- Control del polvo peligroso que se genera durante los procesos de reparacin de mortero (Control of Hazardous Dust During Tuckpointing) (Pub. No. 2008-126, September 2008) Construction workers are exposed to hazardous dust with crystalline silica when grinding or cutting mortar or cement from between the bricks of old buildings. NIOSH found that exposures could be reduced using tool-mounted local exhaust ventilation and work practices.
- Elementos (ICP) (Digestin por cido ntrico/perclrico 7300) (Elements by ICP (Nitric/Perchloric Acid Ashing 7300))
- Temas de salud y seguridad de NIOSH: Jardinera (NIOSH Topic Page: Landscaping)
