December 10, 2003—A new software package that overrides all other applications to broadcast emergency messages on individual PCs has been launched in the wake of rising concerns about corporate security.
The communication problem is a serious one, says developer Netpresenter. Its research suggests that most organizations have prepared evacuation plans only for fire hazards. Many of these may not have been tested and may not be appropriate in any case if some other form of emergency occurs.
The system, recently adopted at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, enables operators to broadcast pre-defined or bespoke alerts to any centrally networked monitor, with the messages appearing over anything else that may be on the screen at the time.
