A new policy from the British Government requires new government buildings to be well designed in an effort to restore the sense of civic pride once felt towards British public buildings. The new report, Better Public Buildings, lists the social and economic advantages of good design and provides guidelines for better buildings. Each government department commissioning a building must now have a ministerial team member responsible for implementing the principles of good design. The design policy will be administered by the new Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), which is chaired by Stuart Lipton, who originated good design in commercial property development. CABE is currently overseeing new projects for the Courts Service in Exeter, Bristol, and Cambridge.
