New UK Green Building Council calls for improvements to built environment

February 26, 2007—More than twenty major commercial organizations attended the Inaugural Meeting of the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) in London recently.

The Founding Members agreed that the role and function of the UKGBC would extend beyond reducing the environmental impact of buildings, to include the broader issues associated with delivering a sustainable built environment.

The UKGBC will be established as a new not-for-profit company. A Chairman is being sought and the process of recruiting a Chief Executive will start immediately.

The Founding Members agreed that the role of the UKGBC was to act as a champion for sustainable buildings by:

  • Dramatically improving the built environment
  • Developing and enhancing the UK’s world class position in sustainable building design
  • Transforming the market for ‘sustainable’ products

The UKGBC will establish categories of membership which will enable engagement and collaboration with the many existing groups with an interest in delivering a sustainable built environment, it says. Active participation of professional institutions, trade associations and specialist interest groups in the key UKGBC committees and expert panels will be sought and encouraged.
