New UK report examines safety measures for workplace vehicles

February 8, 2002—A new Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report has been published to examine how death and injury from industrial vehicles can be prevented.

Several approaches and technologies have been developed to improve the safety of pedestrians around mobile equipment at work, and the report looks specifically at where there is confined space or where restricted lighting limits the drivers’ visibility.

The report looks in detail at:

  • vehicle ergonomics and visual task analysis;
  • aids to improve reversing and sight lines;
  • direct body detection techniques; and
  • conventional transponder (RFID) and VLF magnetic dipole detection technologies.

Employers can obtain a copy of the report, “Improving the safety of workers in the vicinity of mobile plant (CRR 358/2001)” from HSE Books; telephone: 01-787 881165.
