March 6, 2006—A new business taskforce has been brought together to identify ways in which companies can move to more sustainable consumption and production practices.
The UK Governments strategy for sustainable development—Securing the Future—was published in 2005. In it, the government committed to creating a new Sustainable Consumption and Production Business Taskforce to develop ideas for practical action on key aspects of sustainable consumption and production.
The taskforce will look for practical ways in which businesses can minimize the negative impacts of products and services throughout the whole of their life, while remaining profitable and make recommendations to Government on how policy can support such effort.
The Taskforce will:
- Provide policy guidance to Government, so that Government in turn can encourage a move to more sustainable consumption and production;
- Foster debate and learning on the most effective ways that business can move in the direction of more sustainable consumption and production;
- Identify the tools and skills to enable business to implement sustainable consumption and production initiatives.
