April 3, 2002—New York Governor George E. Pataki recently announced that the State of New York has formally adopted the International Code. The newly adopted State Fire Prevention and Building Code may be used beginning July 2002. The announcement followed a meeting at which the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council voted unanimously to adopt the International Codes.
In making the announcement, Pataki commented that “these comprehensive building and energy codes will ensure that our homes and workplaces are safe and energy efficient, while also spurring new construction and job opportunities across the state.”
New York will update its code on a regular schedule consistent with the International Codes three-year review cycle.
The American Institute of Architects provides several education tools regarding the International Code. The “International Code Adoption Resource Library” CD (ICARL) was developed in conjunction with several other building and construction industry associations.
