July 24, 2002—Governor George E. Pataki has announced that builders and developers may now use new comprehensive building and energy codes that will reduce development costs, increase job opportunities, and provide a major incentive for new investment, construction and economic development in cities, towns and villages throughout New York State.
The new Fire Prevention and Building Code and the State Energy Conservation and Construction Code, which replace the current outdated code, are based upon text of the 2000 International Codes, published by the International Code Council and reflect current technology, product and safety standards and enhanced energy conservation requirements.
A 180-day transition period is in effect, during which regulated parties have the option to comply with the current code or the provisions of the new code when submitting building permit applications. After the transition period, ending December 31, 2002, the new Uniform Code will formally supercede current provisions. The Energy Code takes effect immediately.
