New York City to use wind power in two city-owned industrial centers

February 11, 2005—The New York City Economic Development Corporation is purchasing wind-generated power for two city-owned industrial centers in Sunset Park, Brooklyn: the Brooklyn Army Terminal and the Bush Terminal. The Brooklyn Army Terminal is four million square feet, and the Army Terminal is one million square feet.

The power is generated by “wind farms” in upstate Madison County, New York, and is available to consumers and businesses across the state of New York. The energy is delivered by ConEdison Solutions and provided by Community Energy, Inc., a marketer of wind-generated electricity. Most of the energy is supplied by the 30-megawatt Fenner Wind Power Project in Madison County, New York.

ConEdison Solutions officials estimated that these purchases together deliver an environmental benefit equivalent to the planting of approximately 275,000 trees or reducing automobile usage by approximately 3.5 million miles per year.

The city is buying approximately 3.7 million kilowatt-hours of wind power per year to help power the two facilities, the largest purchase of “green power” in New York City government history, according to government officials.
