February 8, 2008—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its quarterly lists of leading US green power purchasers as of January 8, 2008. The Top 10 College and University list represents the largest purchasers among higher education institutions within the Green Power Partnership. The combined green power purchases of these organizations amounts to more than 662 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power more than 68,000 average American homes annually, notes EPA.
The Top 10 College & University green power purchasers (listed in descending order of annual green power usage [kWh] per year, along with the percentage of total electricity use) are:
- New York University (University Athletic Association–UAA): 132,000,000; 100%
- University of Pennsylvania (Ivy League): 112,000,000; 29%
- Pennsylvania State University (Big 10): 83,600,000; 20%
- California State University System (Numerous): 66,189,000; 9%
- Duke University (Atlantic Coast Conference—ACC): 54,075,000; 31%
- University of California Santa Cruz (Association of Division III Independents): 50,000,000; 100%
- Texas A&M University System (Numerous): 43,350,000; 15%
- The City University of New York (Numerous): 41,400,000; 10%
