NIOSH offers new information on respirator use

November 14, 2003—A new site provides valuable information to construction and maintenance workers who want to reduce exposure to dusts and gases; healthcare workers who want to protect themselves from diseases potentially spread through the air, such as SARS or Tuberculosis; and all employers and employees desiring protection in case of fire or a biochemical terrorist attack.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) new safety and health topic page concerning Respirators includes information on what respirators are, how they work, and what is needed for a respirator to provide adequate protection, as well as types of respirators, guidance for selection and use, user notices, and more. The site also contains all currently certified models of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) approved for use by emergency responders in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) environments.
