NIOSH presents awards for occupational safety and health

May 9, 2005—The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) presented annual awards on April 28, 2005, to recognize exceptional achievements in the field of occupational safety and health.

The annual Alice Hamilton Awards recognize the scientific excellence of technical and instructional materials by NIOSH scientists and engineers:

  • Educational Materials Category Winner: Sestito JP, Lunsford RA, Hamilton AC, and Rosa RR, eds. Worker health chartbook, 2004.
  • Biological Sciences Category Winner: Biagini RE, Smith JP, Sammons DL, MacKenzie BA, Striley CAF, Robertson SK, and Snawder JE. Development of a sensitivity enhanced multiplexed fluorescence covalent microbead immunosorbent assay (FCMIA) for the measurement of glyphosate, atrazine and metolachlor mercapturate in water and urine.
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Category Winner: Dong RG, Schopper AW, McDowell TW, Welcome DE, Wu JZ, Smutz WP, Warren C, and Rakheja S. Vibration energy absorption (VEA) in human fingers-hand-arm system.
  • Human Studies Category Winner: Collins JW, Wolf L, Bell J, and Evanoff B. An evaluation of a “best practices” musculoskeletal injury prevention program in nursing homes.

The 2005 James P. Keogh Award for Outstanding Service in Occupational Safety and Health was presented to Dr. Rosemary Sokas for her contributions in occupational safety and health through her work at the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, the George Washington University, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), NIOSH, and the University of Illinois.
