February 27, 2006—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a publication providing recommendations to laboratory and healthcare workers, those who handle live or dead animals, and anyone who lives or works in areas with WNV-infected mosquitoes for protection from West Nile Virus (WNV) exposure.
The document addresses such topics as identifying which workers may be exposed to WNV, who is at risk, how to handle dead animals, how WNV affects pregnancy, and what to do if infection with WNV is suspected.
Recommendations for Protecting Laboratory, Field and Clinical Workers from West Nile Virus Exposure—DHHS (NIOSH) Pub. 2006-115, can be accessed from NIOSH. NIOSH also offers a publication called Recommendations for Outdoor Workers—NIOSH Pub. 2005-155.
