December 24, 2003—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will conduct an independent study, as requested by the Transportation Security Administration, to determine the potential radiation exposures to employees who operate X-ray generating machines. NIOSH researchers will also assess the workplace practices, training information, and equipment and maintenance requirements. NIOSH will use its findings to make recommendations regarding the need for radiation badges.
NIOSH has added a page to its Web site called “X-ray Exposures from Airport Screening Machines” that provides links to Health Hazard Evaluation reports and other information related to the study. As the study progresses, more information will be added, including FAQ’s, recommendations for baggage screeners, and more.
