November 24, 2006—The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) recently named North Manchester Sixth Form College and North City Public Library (MANCAT) as the winner of the first prize at the inaugural RIBA/LSC Further Education Design Excellence Awards.
The first prize of £5,000 was awarded to Walker Simpson Architects, who designed North Manchester Sixth Form College. They were commended for designing the most effective and innovative learning environment in this sector, which encourages and stimulates both teachers and learners and promotes the positive benefits of education and training.
Second place with a prize of £2,000 was awarded to Pick Everard, architect of Stephenson College, Leicestershire, for demonstrating exceptional points of special merit.
This new ideas competition challenged architects and architecture students to create a new style of learning environment for the 21st century. The six shortlisted entries were judged on their innovation, excellence, adaptability, atmosphere, and the “feel good factor” they bring to the learning and skills sector.
Factors such as environmental efficiency, innovative use of materials and space, and support for IT facilities were considered by the panel of judges who convened to consider over 20 entries for the shortlist.
The other 4 colleges shortlisted for the award will receive highly commended certificates. They are: South Trafford College, by John McAslan & Partners; Newcastle Performance Academy, by RMJM; South East Essex College, by KSS Design Group Ltd.; and New College Durham, by Ryder HKS.
