June 2, 2003—As the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)hosted its first of a series of conferences to discuss wholesale energy market design issues, several commissioners from New England states voiced their strong support for policies in the US Congress and FERC that support open energy market competition that meets the needs and requirements of regional markets and consumers.
The commissioners wanted to ensure that FERC continues its course of wholesale market competition while granting individual states the authority to manage and monitor their markets. In addition, the commissioners wanted to ensure that any federal legislation adopted in the pending energy bill would allow New England states—and others across the nation—to continue moving forward with their wholesale power markets.
Over the past several weeks, seventy-two utility commissioners from twenty states announced their support for regulatory efforts to further improve America’s wholesale power markets.
