October 19, 2001—The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has released the results of its recent survey entitled “State of the Campus Environment: A National Report Card on Environmental Performance and Sustainability in Higher Education.” NWF asked every college and university in the US to describe its environmental practices, including recycling, landscaping, transportation, campus policies, curriculum, and energy use. 1,116 responses were received from presidents, provosts, and chiefs of administration and operations at 891 of the nation’s 4,100 colleges and universities (almost 22% of schools).
NWF says that the survey, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, gives a glimpse of the future and will help schools assess, compare, and improve their own environmental performance. The full report is available free online from NWF. A print version can also be ordered.
