NY federal building becomes second in U.S. to be 100% Wind Powered

October 16, 2002—The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has announced Utica, NYs Alexander Pirnie Federal Building’s participation in a wind power electricity agreement with Select Energy and Community Energy, Inc. (CEI). The Utica facility now joins the GSA’s Binghamton Federal Building as the only two federal sites in the country powered entirely by wind-generated electricity.

The GSA will buy 600,000 kilowatt-hours per year of wind energy produced by the Fenner Wind Farm in upstate New York and marketed by CEI of Wayne, Pennsylvania. CEI sells the energy wholesale to Berlin, Conn.-based Select Energy, which is providing a total of 10 megawatts of power to several GSA facilities in New York state through 2005. The wind energy contract took effect in July 2002 and extends 34 months.

Wind energy is a fuel free, zero-emission electric power source. Compared to the average generation mix of a spot market purchase from the NY ISO, the Utica Federal Building wind purchase will annually offset approximately 926,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, a leading cause of global warming. The emissions reductions are equivalent to planting over 63,000 trees each year.
