December 21, 2005—Two major jurisdictions recently took steps to adopt the International Code Councils publications as the model codes for construction, says the ICC. New York City passed the administrative provisions of the code, which becomes effective July 1, 2007, and identifies the 2003 editions of the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Residential Code, and International Fuel Gas Code.
The Louisiana legislature recently adopted, and Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed, a bill creating a statewide uniform building code for residential and commercial properties to assure the availability of affordable insurance for businesses and home owners. The bill calls for the state to adopt the International Building Code, International Existing Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, and International Fuel Gas Code, says ICC.
The bill applies to buildings rebuilt in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and to all buildings built or rebuilt statewide starting in 2007.
The legislation also creates the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council to educate and certify the building officials that will enforce the standards.
The International Code Council publishes the standards that will serve as the foundation of the Louisiana statewide codes, requiring each local jurisdiction to enforce the code. For more information, visit the ICC Web site.
