January 3, 2005—Corporate College West, Cuyahoga Community College’s latest lifelong learning and training initiative in Westlake, has been given an Energy Efficiency Award by Governor Bob Taft.
The Governor’s Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency recognition program honors individuals, businesses, industries and organizations that have improved Ohio’s economic competitiveness and its environment through the effective and innovative use of energy efficiency. Corporate College received one of 12 awards given this year.
The awards were presented at a ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium in Columbus on November 17, 2004. This is the eleventh year that the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Energy Efficiency has given out these awards. The Office of Energy develops and administers programs that promote the natural linkage between energy, economics and the environment.
Corporate College contracted with The Brewer-Garrett Company, an energy services company, to upgrade its mechanical files. New chillers equipped with variable speed drives sized to accommodate future campus growth were installed. In addition, networked local area remote controls monitor heating zones, which eliminates the concurrent heating and cooling along with demand control ventilation strategies, which reduces over-ventilation during periods of low, or no occupancy. Demand ventilation balances the need for outdoor air and the cost to condition this air.
This is the second year in a row that the College was recognized with an energy efficiency award. Tri-C was the recipient of a 2003 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency for its HB 7 Energy Conservation Program. This was a major capital improvement program that targeted college-wide energy conservation. Tri-C partnered with The Brewer-Garrett Company to design a program that would maximize energy savings and improve the campuses with no net cost.
