Oregon receives final approval for state safety and health program

May 27, 2005—Oregon has become the 17th state to receive final approval from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to run its own occupational safety and health plan.

OSHA has determined that Oregon’s state program meets all the necessary requirements and is “at least as effective” as the federal program. Oregon has operated an approved state plan since 1972; final approval means that federal OSHA standards and enforcement authority no longer apply, with the exception of federal OSHA oversight of temporary labor camps.
