October 18, 2004—The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) signed alliances last month focusing on safety professionals; fall hazards in construction; and the prevention of back, hand, and laceration injuries among subcontractors.
OSHA added the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST) to the BCSP Alliance launched one year ago. The Alliance continues a collaborative effort with OSHA to encourage safety professionals to strive for enhanced knowledge of safety and health programs and to encourage achievement of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation. The partners will develop safety curricula and will pursue joint research objectives and projects.
OSHA also signed an alliance with the Gilbane Building Company to focus on preventing exposure to fall hazards. OSHA and Gilbane will develop safety and health curricula on fall prevention for the construction industry. Gilbane will also conduct two 30-hour construction safety courses for its employees during each year of the alliance, and will offer those courses to others in the construction industry and to OSHA staff.
OSHA’s alliance with the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) will emphasize prevention of back, hand, and laceration injuries. According to an association survey of member companies, these are the three most prevalent injuries suffered by their employees.
