April 11, 2007—The US Department of Labor’s (DOL) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has highlighted several new and continuing members at the “Star” (highest) level of its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) in recent weeks for their excellence in effective safety and health management.
The highlighted facilities include:
- Placid Refining Co. in Port Allen, LA;
- CF Industries, Inc. of Aurora, NE (special recognition for 15,000 consecutive days [more than 40 years] of operation without a lost-time incident);
- General Electric Transportation Systems’ Global Signaling division in Warrensburg, MO;
- US Ecology Idaho in Grand View, ID;
- JR Simplot Co.’s Conda Pump Station in Soda Springs, ID (special recognition for maintaining VPP standards for 11 years);
- Huntsman Polyurethanes research and development center in Derry, NH (special recognition for its three-year record of zero occupational illnesses and injuries);
- Rocky Mountain Metal Container plant in Golden, CO;
- Honeywell Technology Solutions, Inc. in Colorado Springs, CO;
- Dixie Consumer Products’ Leominster, MA;
- Lititz, PA, Carrier Annex of the US Postal Service;
- the US Postal Service’s Everett, WA, Processing and Distribution Center; and
- Delta Air Lines and its subsidiary DAL Global Services for passenger service operations at the Colorado Springs, CO, Airport.
OSHA’s VPP, which now includes more than 1,600 worksites representing more than 270 industries nationwide, recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Members voluntarily exceed OSHA requirements. VPP requires a high degree of management support and employee involvement. OSHA says that participants typically achieve injury and illness rates more than 50 percent below their respective industries’ averages.
