July 30, 2007—The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration singled out several new members at the “Star,” or highest, level of its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) for recognition in recent weeks.
- Rockwell Collins Services Wichita Service Center, Kansas, was applauded for its “outstanding” efforts, including management commitment to safety and health, and employee involvement in safety and health programs. The Wichita Service Center has 175 employees who repair and maintain aircraft aviation electronics.
- Butterball LLC in Carthage, Missouri, “has exhibited excellence in safety and health management,” says OSHA. Butterball has 790 employees who slaughter and process poultry.
- Boise Cascade’s Packing and Newsprint facility in Burley, Idaho, was commended for its “impressive” level of safety and health excellence. The Boise Cascade Burley facility has 132 onsite employees who manufacture combined board sheets and process them into boxes.
- The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii was applauded for its “hard work, compassion for your fellow employees, team spirit, and commitment to excellence.” The evaluation team commended several best practices, including the VPP Passport (an incentive program for individual employees) and an Ergonomics “Flex and Stretch” Program.
- Bay LTD, Scott Electric Co., All Tech Inspection, Brock Maintenance, Inc., Veolia Environmental Services, and H&S Constructors — six resident contractors in Three Rivers, Texas — were all commended for their “outstanding” safety and health programs.
The VPP recognizes worksites that are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards and encourages cooperative relationships between labor, management, unions, and government.
