December 31, 2004—The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) formed alliances recently with organizations representing the building service contracting industry and the utility construction industry.

Building Service Contractors Association International Ensuring a safer and more healthful workplace for workers in the building service contracting industry is the goal of OSHA’s new alliance with the Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI). The goal of the alliance is to advance worker safety and health issues, with an added focus on workers with limited English proficiency. BSCAI members and others will be armed with information related to reducing injuries and illnesses associated with musculoskeletal disorders, as well as exposure to hazardous materials.

BSCAI is a trade association representing the building service contracting industry and consists of members from more than 2,000 companies. BSCAI’s member companies provide cleaning, building maintenance, and other related services to building owners and managers.

National Utility Contractors Association Furthering the safety and health of construction workers is the goal of a second alliance between OSHA and a national association dedicated to workers in the utility construction industry. The National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) joined OSHA to reduce and prevent exposure to underground utility construction hazards associated with trenching and excavation, tunneling, and confined space entry. Training and education is a key component to the alliance, which calls for the delivery of NUCA training programs to OSHA staff, and encourages NUCA’s members to act as mentors to utility contractors who need guidance and assistance with safety and health issues.

With a membership of 2,000 in 43 chapters, NUCA represents contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers in the utility construction industry. The association provides continuing education to members through the NUCA Foundation for Education and Research.
