OSHA interprets standards on asbestos, industrial stair railings, more

December 12, 2008—The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently published several Interpretations explaining various OSHA standards, including:

  • Refresher training requirements for Class III asbestos work and training for excavations disturbing soil with ACM
  • OSHA’s position on the use of lancets or lancing devices without safety-engineered features for finger prick blood sampling in the workplace
  • Compliance of stair and platform railings with height requirements in OSHA standards for fixed industrial stairs
  • Requirements for tapping or tying-in to asbestos-containing cement water pipes in construction
  • Storage and use of compressed gas cylinders; whether cylinder is considered an oxidizing compressed gas or oxygen cylinder
  • Employer selection of local fire department as its off-site rescue service for compliance with 29 CFR 1910.146(k)(1)
  • Whether a pH buffer solution can be used as a cleansing agent for employees who work with Portland cement
  • Placement of sharps containers and requirement to ensure they are maintained in an upright position
