OSHA names Milliken STAR Site in workplace health and safety

January 19, 2005—The Live Oak Plant of Milliken & Company was recently designated a STAR Site in workplace safety and health by the US Dept. of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). With the plant’s certification, 100 percent of Milliken & Company’s US manufacturing locations have received the distinguished VPP (Voluntary Protection Program), an accomplishment that ranks Milliken fourth in the total number of sites in the entire nation, according to company.

“Approval for the Star Voluntary Protection Program is a strong endorsement of the continued dedication demonstrated by Milliken and its employees to workplace safety and health, ” said Jonathan L. Snare, OSHA Acting Assistant Secretary, during the Live Oak Plant award ceremony. “The programs developed at this complex can serve as models for other companies.”

Participation in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program involves a true partnership between government, labor, and private workplaces. The government offers expertise and cooperation for employers willing to undertake the needed steps to reach VPP certifications.

In October 2004 Milliken & Company was named one of “America’s Safest Companies” by Occupational Hazards Magazine, a designation shared by only 17 other companies in the nation. A Malcolm Baldrige National quality Award winner, Milliken & Company is one of the world’s largest privately held textile and chemical manufacturers.
